Designisasystem,
notasurface.Brand decisions determine how something is used, not just how it looks. Spacing logic, type hierarchy, component structure: when those are defined at the start, visual consistency follows from the structure rather than constant re-decisions.
System thinking
Same principles, every project.
Spacing and layout logic
Grids are not aesthetic choices. They determine where the eye goes and whether elements read as related. I start every project by establishing which spatial relationships matter most, then holding to them.
Controlled typography hierarchy
Type does more work than most briefs ask of it. Three clearly defined levels (label, heading, body) and most visual clarity problems disappear before they start. Add levels only when the content genuinely requires it.
Scalable visual systems
A brand that works at launch but breaks when you add four more screens is not a system. I design for the version that exists eighteen months from now. Components, spacing tokens, type scales: built to be extended, not rebuilt.
Impact
Better systems, not just better visuals.
Consistency
Visual decisions stay consistent without constant enforcement. The structure does the enforcing.
Scalability
When someone adds a new section, screen, or format, it fits. Nothing needs to be re-decided from scratch.
Clarity
Structure clarifies before copy has to. A well-built hierarchy reduces the number of things that need to be explained.
Writing
Short pieces on brand systems, type decisions, and what gets lost between brief and handoff. In progress.
